What is STEM? Why STEM?STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. STEM integrates these four disciplines into one cohesive learning platform based on real world applications. Now, more than ever STEM pervades every part of our lives. “In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” - National Science Foundation
The ProblemThe STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and math— have always been dominated by mostly men. Currently, women only make up 27% up jobs in computers, science, and mathematics, and that number is not growing. While there is no evidence that girls are less capable in these fields, they often 'feel' less capable due to various reasons like stereotyping and lack of female role models. Studies show that STEM achievement gaps can emerge as early as elementary grades.
Our MissionGirl STEMpowerment believes that we can help girls change their mindset about what it is they can do, and who they can be, thus showing them more options in the direction they want to go, whether in STEM or other fields. We want to increase young girls' interest in STEM through hands-on educational experiences which also help them develop creativity, cooperative learning, a critical mind and strong thinking skills, thus enabling them to discover new ideas and create new options.
